Hales set a new Olympic record by hitting 48 of 50 shots, just one shot short of his own world record.

China’s Ying Qi secured the silver medal with 44 shots made, while Guatemala’s Jean Pierre Brol Cardenas took bronze with 35 shots.

Hales, who missed only four shots throughout the competition and hit 123 out of 125 in qualifying, attributed his success to maintaining focus and treating the event like his training sessions.

“This is my Olympic debut, and holding your nerve can be tough. My girlfriend, Charlotte Kerwood, who competed in Beijing 2008 and London 2012, gave me valuable advice and support throughout,” Hales said.

This gold medal marks Britain’s third of the Games, following victories in team eventing and mountain biking, and adds to the country’s total of 11 medals. Team GB is aiming for at least 50 medals, with a hopeful target of 70.
