The multi-year contract will see Sainz race alongside Alex Albon for the 2025 and 2026 seasons, with an option for an additional year.

Sainz’s move comes as a result of Ferrari’s decision to sign Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton for next season, making Sainz’s future uncertain.

Williams confirmed that American driver Logan Sargeant will be replaced by Sainz at the end of the current season, with Sargeant’s F1 future remaining uncertain.

“I am very happy to announce that I will be joining Williams Racing from 2025 onwards,” Sainz said.

“It has taken me some time to announce my decision due to the complexity of this year’s driver market. However, I am confident that Williams is the right place for my F1 journey. I am proud to join a historic and successful team and am excited about the challenge of helping Williams return to the front of the grid.”

Sainz, who has won three F1 races including this year’s Australian Grand Prix, is expected to make a significant impact at Williams.

The team’s principal, James Vowles, praised Sainz as one of the most talented drivers on the grid and expressed confidence that his addition, along with Albon, will provide one of the strongest line-ups in F1.

“We are excited about the signing of Carlos, which is a strong statement of intent for our team,” Vowles said. “Carlos’s experience and race-winning pedigree align perfectly with our ambition to return to competitiveness. We are investing heavily to make that happen, and Carlos’s commitment underscores our serious approach to this goal.”

Williams also thanked Logan Sargeant for his contributions and wished him well for the remainder of the season.
