Mourinho began his pre-season camp last month, but Djiku was granted an extended break after participating in Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic (CAR).

Djiku finally joined his club teammates for pre-season training earlier in July and seems to be adapting well to his new environment and manager.

Discussing the fierce competition within the Fenerbahçe squad, Djiku noted that it enhances the team’s overall strength. Djiku remarked, “Fenerbahçe is a very big team, and with big players comes increased competition, which ultimately benefits the team. Not only in the defense but across all positions, every player is working hard to show their best and help Fenerbahçe achieve great success.”

Djiku’s rapport with Mourinho appears to be flourishing. The defender joins an exclusive list of Ghanaian footballers, including Michael Essien and Sulley Muntari, who have worked with the former Chelsea manager. Recent photos from a Fenerbahçe training session, showing Mourinho with his arm around Djiku, have gone viral, sparking positive interpretations among Ghanaians on social media regarding their budding bond.

Since joining Fenerbahçe in the summer of 2023 on a free transfer from Ligue 1 side Racing Strasbourg, Djiku has established himself as a key player. His praise for the competitive environment and his evident connection with Mourinho suggest a promising season ahead for both the defender and the club.
