The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has instructed its members to cease all services in response to the government’s decision to freeze their July salaries.

This includes stopping attendance at meetings, academic counseling, and supervising students.

The freeze came after the Minister of Education directed Principals and the Controller and Accountant General not to validate July salaries due to the ongoing strike.

CETAG has referred this decision to their lawyers for further action.

The National Labour Commission (NLC) supports the salary freeze, citing the strike as illegal. NLC Executive Secretary Ofosu Asamoah stated that the court had already ruled against the strike, making it unlawful and justifying the salary freeze.

The strike, affecting all 46 public colleges of education, is aimed at demanding better working conditions and pay. CETAG is calling for the payment of additional duties performed in 2022 and better allowances for its members.

As a result, the academic calendar is disrupted, and students are waiting for classes to resume.
