Kimberly A. Cheatle (born 1970/1971) is an American law enforcement officer who served as the 27th Director of the United States Secret Service from September 2022 to July 2024.

Early Career
Cheatle’s journey to the Secret Service began while she was still a student at Eastern Illinois University. Eager to join the prestigious agency, she applied during her college years but was advised to first complete her degree. Taking this advice to heart, she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sociology in 1992 and reapplied to the Secret Service, successfully joining the agency in 1995.
Her first field assignment took her to Detroit, where she spent about 4.5 years focusing on financial crime investigations. This early experience laid a solid foundation for her future roles within the agency.
Protecting Vice Presidents and Presidents
She served on Vice President Dick Cheney’s detail during the tumultuous 9/11 attacks, playing a crucial role in his evacuation from the White House.

Additionally, she provided protection for President Bill Clinton during his visits to Michigan and Indiana in 1996, and later served on Vice President Joe Biden’s security detail during his tenure in office.
Advancing Through the Ranks
Throughout her decades-long career, Cheatle worked in numerous offices and states, steadily advancing through the ranks. She served as the resident agent in charge in Grand Rapids, Michigan, demonstrating her leadership and operational skills.
In a historic achievement, Cheatle became the first woman to serve as the agency’s assistant director of protective operations.
In 2016, she was appointed as the special agent in charge of the Secret Service’s training academy, where she was responsible for coordinating all aspects of training and career development for new agents.
Leaving and Returning to the Secret Service
In 2019, Cheatle briefly left the Secret Service to take on the role of director of global security at PepsiCo. However, her commitment to public service brought her back to the agency.
In 2021, she was honored with a Presidential Rank Award by President Biden, recognizing her exceptional performance as a high-ranking federal civil servant.
In August 2022, President Biden appointed Cheatle as the director of the Secret Service, marking the culmination of her extensive and impactful career within the agency.
However, she resigned in July 2024 after the assassination attempt on Donald Trump.
