Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan has dismissed Information Minister Nape Nnauye following his controversial comments about election rigging.

On July 15, 2024, Nnauye was filmed at a rally in Bukoba suggesting that election results could be manipulated, stating that they depend on “the person counting and making announcements” rather than just the votes cast.

He claimed he could help a ruling party MP win the 2025 election using “legal, half legal, and illegal” methods.

The video prompted widespread criticism from Tanzanians who felt Nnauye’s remarks undermined democratic principles. He later claimed his comments were made in jest and apologized, affirming his support for “free and fair elections.”

In response to the backlash, President Hassan removed Nnauye as part of a cabinet reshuffle. Former Land and Housing Development Minister Jerry Slaa has been appointed as the new Information Minister.

Additionally, Foreign Minister January Makamba has been replaced by Mahmoud Thabiti Kombo, Tanzania’s ambassador to Italy. Nnauye, a long-time member of the ruling Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party, has previously faced criticism for similar statements.
