Legendary Ghanaian sound engineer Fred Kyei Mensah, widely known as Fredyma, has shared a surprising piece of his musical past, revealing that he was once in the choir with Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), the running mate for the New Patriotic Party presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia at Prempeh College.

In an exclusive interview on “The Chat” on Channel One TV, Fredyma delved into the origins of his musical journey.
Reflecting on his early influences, he mentioned his family’s musical heritage, particularly his maternal grandfather, a trumpeter at their local church.

“When you go into my family, my maternal grandfather was a trumpeter. Okay. The local church. So, a Sunday school people, you know, during Sundays, after Sunday school, just go to the main church and you see me sitting by the organ, we call them organist. Organist, yeah. Sitting by them, praising them,” Fredyma explained.
He continued, “The big one. Yeah, they will not allow you. So, I had the opportunity to go to Prempeh College and I found one, I joined the school choir. That’s where my music journey started. So, joining the school choir, I had some tutorials from our music teacher, the late Dominic.”
The most striking revelation came when Fredyma disclosed, “Fortunately, in the school choir, do you know who I was in the school choir with? Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh. He was a chorister. He was singing alto and I was singing tenor.”
