Vincent “Sweet Pea” Burns, the former Kentucky football defensive lineman, has passed away at the age of 43.

The University of Kentucky confirmed his death in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on July 17, 2024.
Burns, who transferred from Northern Arizona, played three seasons with the Wildcats from 2002 to 2004.
He was a two-time All-SEC selection, honored in 2002 and 2003. During his tenure, he recorded 168 tackles, including 37 for loss, and led the SEC with 18 tackles for loss in 2003.

Known for his positive personality, Burns was a beloved figure at Kentucky. The Valdosta, Georgia native earned his nickname “Sweet Pea” as a baby and was respected by teammates and fans alike.
After being drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the third round of the 2005 NFL Draft, Burns never played in the NFL due to a knee injury.
He spent his rookie season sidelined and was placed on the practice squad in 2006 before being released.
The cause of his death has not been disclosed.
