The Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture has recently taken steps to improve conditions at Ghana’s iconic National Theatre by procuring eight air conditioners.

This decision follows ongoing concerns about the facility’s ventilation.
According to Joy FM’s entertainment journalist Kwame Dadzie, who visited the theatre, a total of sixteen air conditioners, each with a capacity of ten horsepower, have been acquired and are set to be installed soon.
This move comes in the wake of earlier upgrades that saw the replacement of carpets after complaints from media personalities and critics in 2018.
However, musician turned politician Rex Omar has criticized the government’s approach, labeling it as mediocre.
He argues that the theatre already has a central air conditioning system and suggests that the recent purchase of additional units was hastily done without proper planning.

In an interview with Joy Prime’s Prime Morning show, Rex Omar expressed his preference for the opposition party’s plans, particularly under a potential John Mahama administration.
He claimed that such plans include comprehensive renovations for cultural centers across Ghana, starting with the National Theatre in Accra and potentially constructing a new theatre in Kumasi.
Meanwhile, Enock Quaye, the Accountant and acting Estate Officer at the National Theatre, disclosed that the procurement of these air conditioners cost approximately GH₵800,000.
He assured the public that the installation will commence soon, aiming to enhance the comfort of theatre patrons.
Since its opening in 1992, the National Theatre has been a pivotal venue for various cultural events, offering a platform for concerts, dance performances, theatrical productions, and exhibitions.
Governed by the National Theatre Law of 1991, PNDC Law 259, the theatre continues to play a significant role in Ghana’s cultural landscape.
