Bernie Kosar, Former Browns QB Discloses Parkinson’s and Liver Disease Diagnoses

Bernie Kosar, the renowned former quarterback of the Cleveland Browns, has revealed his battle with cirrhosis of the liver and Parkinson’s disease.

This news surfaced through an article in Cleveland Magazine detailing Kosar’s health challenges.

At 60 years old, Kosar is currently awaiting a liver transplant, a necessity exacerbated by his deteriorating liver condition.

Despite recent improvements in his health earlier this year, his hepatologist, Dr. Anthony Post of University Hospitals, cautioned that liver disease can be unpredictable.

Additionally, Kosar disclosed that he received a Parkinson’s diagnosis from an NFL doctor in February 2024.

Reflecting on his health journey, Kosar admitted to experiencing liver-related symptoms for years but initially dismissed them.

However, a definitive diagnosis of cirrhosis about 16 months ago underscored the severity of his condition.

“My body gave out on me,” Kosar told the magazine, recalling an episode last December while attending a Browns home game against the New York Jets.

“I really felt like I wasn’t going to make it home from the Jets game. I sucked it up, though, and continued to avoid the doctors until the new year.

“Then I went into the hospital and got a massive blood transfusion. It was like: ‘How are you alive? How are you moving? Because your hemoglobin levels are so low.”’

Further complicating his health, Kosar recently fell ill during a trip to the Super Bowl in Las Vegas, leading to another hospitalization.

Despite these challenges, Kosar remains resilient, navigating his health battles with determination and seeking medical care as needed.
