Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, known as NAPO, the running mate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming 2024 elections, has sparked widespread criticism on social media following a controversial remark about Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah.

During his unveiling in the Ashanti Region on July 9, 2024, NAPO asserted that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s government had surpassed all previous administrations in Ghana’s history, including that of Kwame Nkrumah.
“It has never happened in the history of Ghana. If President Akufo-Addo retires, I can hit my chest and state that since the nation’s inception in 1957, there has not been a president who has helped the state more than Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
“I am saying that from 1957 to now, whether you pick ‘your’ Kwame Nkrumah… there is nobody who has led Ghana and protected the country or developed Ghana more than Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo,” he said.
These remarks have ignited a storm of reactions on social media, with many users expressing strong disapproval and viewing NAPO’s comments as disrespectful to Kwame Nkrumah’s enduring legacy.

One user tweeted, “Such disrespect ‘your Kwame Nkrumah,” while another urged, “Regardless of political affiliation, let’s not belittle Kwame Nkrumah; he built Ghana and Africa, and no one can match him!”
“I am appalled that someone of NAPO’s stature would make such statements. This is a blatant disregard for our forefathers’ achievements. What Nkrumah achieved in his early years surpasses the entire tenure of the NPP,” another user commented.
Critics also pointed out previous instances where NAPO had made similar remarks, suggesting a pattern of what they perceived as arrogance.
“This is not the first time NAPO has displayed such ignorance and arrogance about ‘your’ Kwame Nkrumah. Let’s not forget,” one user noted.
Others questioned the basis of NAPO’s comparison and challenged the NPP to list its achievements in comparison to Nkrumah’s transformative legacy.
