Oliver Mellor is a British actor and former personal trainer, perhaps best known for his role as Dr. Matt Carter in the ITV soap opera “Coronation Street,” which he played from August 20, 2010, to April 5, 2013.

Early Life and Education

Mellor grew up in Windsor, Berkshire, with his father, a hotelier, his mother, a flight attendant, and his older sister. He developed a passion for sports early on and was a county rugby player before injuries curtailed his sporting career. Transitioning from athletics, Mellor pursued a career in acting and graduated from the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in the summer of 2005.

Stage Career

Between 2003 and 2005, Mellor made several stage appearances, showcasing his versatility in productions such as “Twelve Angry Men,” “Cyrano de Bergerac,” “The Man of Mode,” and “Pericles, Prince of Tyre.”

Television Career

Mellor’s television career began with notable guest appearances in several popular British series. In 2006, he appeared in the “Doctor Who” episode “Army of Ghosts” as a Torchwood Institute employee named Matt. The same year, he played Det. Monroe in the late-night “Hollyoaks” spin-off “Hollyoaks: In the City,” and Dr. Fitzgerald in ITV’s “The Royal.”

In 2007, Mellor appeared in the BBC soap “EastEnders” as Geoff and guest-starred in three episodes of ITV’s “Emmerdale” as Ricky Walsh. He also featured in an episode of the second series of E4’s drama “Skins,” which was broadcast on March 17, 2007. In 2008, he guest-starred in the BBC daytime soap “Doctors” as Jack Smith.

Mellor’s notable appearances continued with a guest role in “Midsomer Murders” in February 2011, playing Julian Woodley in the episode “Fit For Murder.”

Coronation Street

Mellor’s most prominent role came in 2010 when he joined the cast of “Coronation Street” as Dr. Matt Carter. Initially signed for four episodes during Natasha Blakeman’s exit storyline, Mellor’s character became a recurring presence on the show. He played a key role during the soap’s 50th anniversary week, including the live episode on December 9, 2010, where he provided medical care during a dramatic tram accident storyline. Mellor continued to appear on the show until his character was written out in April 2013.

Personal Life

Outside of acting, Mellor has a diverse range of interests. Before his acting career, he worked as a personal trainer and was involved in various sports, including fencing, fishing, rugby, skiing, snowboarding, and running. In 2011, he participated in a charity challenge with Get On Africa, where he learned to ride motorbikes to deliver lifesaving medical support to remote villages in Lesotho, alongside his “Coronation Street” co-star Shobna Gulati.
