Egyptian football suffered a heartbreaking loss this weekend with the passing of Ahmed Refaat. The 31-year-old player succumbed to complications following a cardiac arrest he suffered during a match in March.

Refaat collapsed while playing for Modern Future against Al-Ittihad Alexandria in the Egyptian Premier League. He was rushed to intensive care and received a pacemaker to aid his recovery.

The former Zamalek player initially announced his retirement due to his health condition. However, his club, Modern Future, confirmed his passing on Saturday.
“With great sadness, Modern Future FC announces the death of Ahmed Refaat,” the club stated. They acknowledged his fight for life since the March 11th health crisis.

Tributes poured in following the news. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) expressed their condolences to Refaat’s family and the Egyptian football community.
“CAF is saddened by the sudden passing of Ahmed Refaat,” their statement read. They highlighted Refaat’s age (31) and the date of his passing (July 6th, 2024). CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe offered heartfelt condolences to Refaat’s family, the Egyptian Football Association, and the entire Egyptian football community.
Liverpool star and Egypt captain Mohamed Salah also took to social media to mourn his teammate. “May God grant patience to his family and all his loved ones,” Salah wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
