Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has strongly condemned Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo’s recent proposal to expand the Supreme Court with five new justices.

Gyamfi has called for the Chief Justice’s resignation, accusing her of pursuing self-serving interests rather than the country’s best interests.
In a statement reported by myjoyonline.com, Gyamfi labeled the Chief Justice’s actions as unconstitutional and demanded corrective measures.
He criticized her for recommending specific justices for appointment, suggesting favoritism and potential conflicts of interest.
“The Chief Justice’s proposal to increase the number of justices appears to be driven by personal agendas rather than the need for judicial efficiency,” Gyamfi stated.

The controversy arose from a letter dated May 30, 2024, where Chief Justice Torkornoo recommended the appointment of five new justices to President Nana Akufo-Addo.
Among the nominees are Justice Angelina Mensah Homiah, Justice Eric Kyei Baffour, Justice Edward Amoako Asante, Justice Cyra Pamela C.A. Koranteng, and Justice Afia Asare Botwe.
This move has sparked criticism from the NDC, with General Secretary Fifi Kwetey accusing the President and the Chief Justice of colluding to shield government officials from accountability. Kwetey labeled the nominations as unjust and called for their reconsideration.
