James Munro, who co-founded Munro’s Books in 1963 with his then-wife Alice Munro, has left a lasting legacy in Victoria.
The bookstore changed locations several times before settling in a former bank on Government Street, purchased by Munro in 1984 for $360,000. Munro strategically opened his first bookshop near theatres to attract moviegoers.

After many successful years, Munro retired in 2014 and generously gave the store to four longtime employees, including Walker.
He believed the business’s value was deeply tied to these employees, whom he regarded as an extended family. Munro’s thoughtful gesture ensured the continuation of a beloved local institution.
James and Alice got married in 1951. They had three daughters together, though one died shortly after birth. James played a significant role in encouraging Alice’s writing career. Unfortunately, the couple divorced in 1972.
