The jury’s decision came swiftly on Tuesday, June 25 2024 afternoon, with nine out of twelve jurors recommending the death penalty for the murder of Kristine Melton, and ten jurors recommending death for the murder of Diane Ruiz.
State prosecutor Sara Miller expressed satisfaction with the jury’s decision, emphasizing that it represents justice for the victims and provides safety for others.
“This case is a win for so many victims,” Miller stated, highlighting the importance of holding Wilson accountable for his heinous crimes.
During closing arguments, Miller underscored the brutal nature of the murders, describing how Wilson admitted to using charm and manipulation to gain control over his victims.
She detailed the injuries inflicted on Melton and Ruiz, noting defensive wounds that indicated their struggles for survival.
“It’s a difficult decision to recommend taking someone’s life,” Miller acknowledged. “But in this case, given the horrific nature of the crimes, it was a justified act.”

In contrast, Wilson’s defense attorney, Kevin Shirley, pleaded for a life sentence, citing Wilson’s troubled mental health and traumatic head injuries as mitigating factors.
Shirley urged jurors to consider Wilson’s humanity amidst his crimes, emphasizing that life imprisonment would be a more humane punishment.
Shirley read a heartfelt letter from Wilson’s sister, portraying Wilson as a victim of his mental health issues and pleading for mercy. “The boy is in there somewhere and is still loved,” Shirley read from the letter, urging jurors to spare Wilson’s life despite the gravity of his actions.
The sentencing concludes a trial that has deeply affected the community, shedding light on the tragic loss of Kristine Melton and Diane Ruiz and prompting reflection on the justice system’s response to such egregious crimes.
