Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Member of Parliament for North Tongu, has called on Ghanaians to rise up against what he describes as state capture masterminded by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Ablakwa’s call follows the President’s failure to halt the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) from selling several of its hotels to a company owned by Bryan Acheampong, the Minister for Food and Agriculture.
“President Akufo-Addo refused to stop the sale of our SSNIT hotels when he met organized labour yesterday. Akufo-Addo’s appointed SSNIT board chair, Elizabeth Ohene is also boldly justifying the stinky deal despite overwhelming opposition from Ghanaians and the protest of labour reps on her board,” Ablakwa wrote on X on Thursday, June 27, 2024.
“It’s now confirmed beyond any scintilla of doubt — President Akufo-Addo is the chief architect of all the putrefying State Capture,” he added. “It’s time to declare our own version of what just happened in Kenya.”

Ablakwa recently led a protest in Accra against the SSNIT hotels sale and has signaled another impending protest.
In Kenya, recent protests over a controversial tax bill led to significant unrest, including the breaching of parliament and fires set in the House.
President William Ruto subsequently announced his decision to reject the bill and sent it back to parliament for reconsideration.
Despite public resistance, SSNIT has justified the sale of 60% shares in Labadi Beach Hotel, La Palm Royal Beach Resort, Ridge Royal Hotel, and Elmina Beach Resort to Rock City Hotel, owned by Bryan Acheampong.
Ablakwa has petitioned the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to investigate the sale.
Both Ablakwa and key members of Organized Labour have expressed strong disagreement with SSNIT’s rationale for the sale.
