The Convention People’s Party (CPP) is facing a potential dilemma ahead of the 2024 general elections, with indications that it may abstain from fielding a presidential candidate.

Sylvester Sarpong-Soprano, the party’s Director of Communications, cited ongoing internal disagreements and persistent legal challenges as significant barriers to organizing primaries and selecting a candidate.
Speaking to Accra-based Asaase Radio, Sarpong-Soprano expressed concerns over the party’s ability to effectively organize itself amidst multiple court cases challenging its leadership.
He emphasized that without a resolution to these internal issues, it would be challenging for the CPP to present a candidate for the upcoming elections.

“I am not optimistic that we can present a candidate for 2024 given the current state of affairs in the party. The CPP has been unable to organize itself due to ongoing court cases contesting the leadership,” Sarpong-Soprano stated frankly during the interview.
As the election date draws nearer, political parties across Ghana are ramping up their campaigns to secure support and prepare for the electoral contest. However, the CPP’s internal strife casts doubt on its ability to participate actively in the electoral process this year.
With less than six months remaining until December, the CPP’s decision not to field a presidential candidate could have significant implications for the political landscape, potentially altering the dynamics of the upcoming elections.
