The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is set to take place in Morocco from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026. The decision was made during the CAF Executive Committee meeting in Cairo, Egypt, and aims to avoid a scheduling conflict with the FIFA Club World Cup happening in June and July in the USA.

The Club World Cup will have an expanded format with 32 teams, including top clubs like Real Madrid and Chelsea, as well as African clubs like Al-Ahly and Mamelodi Sundowns.

Moving AFCON to December also means it will be held during Morocco’s cooler winter season rather than the hot summer. The previous AFCON was won by Cote D’Ivoire with a victory over Nigeria.

This edition was originally planned for an earlier date but was delayed due to scheduling conflicts with FIFA’s Club World Cup competition. Ivory Coast is the defending champion, having won the previous edition in 2023.
