This development arises amid increasing worries regarding the worsening state of the Princess Marie Louise Hospital, the city’s sole public children’s hospital.

The new 120-bed facility, financed by the World Bank with $9 million, is currently 65% finished, as reported by the contractor on site, Joseph Adams of Awerco Construction Limited.

He informed Health Minister Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye that they are striving to meet the September deadline for completion. The hospital will include an emergency unit, neonatal and pediatric intensive care units, recovery wards, three operating theaters, VIP wards, imaging and biomedical laboratories, an outpatient department (OPD), and a mother’s hotel.

The completion of this hospital is anticipated to relieve pressure on the Princess Marie Louise Hospital, enabling essential renovations to be undertaken on the aging facility in the future.

Health Minister Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye commended the contractors for their progress and encouraged them to adhere to the project timelines.

He also appealed to the contractors to engage skilled individuals from the local community to bolster the local economy.

Addressing the media, the minister stated: “This project is a testament to the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration’s commitment to improving pediatric care in Ghana. Once operational, this new hospital will significantly enhance healthcare delivery for children in Accra and beyond.”

This initiative is part of a larger government endeavor to enhance healthcare infrastructure nationwide, focusing particularly on child health.
