The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has confirmed receiving only GH¢47 million from the government for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), not the GH¢80 million that was reported to Parliament.

The issue came up after Yusif Sulemana, an MP, raised concerns about the government’s debt to WAEC.

Initially, WAEC had gotten just GH¢2.3 million out of a needed GH¢95.83 million, leading them to ask for at least half of that amount to run the exams and process results. The BECE is scheduled from July 8 to July 15, 2024, nationwide.

John Kapi, WAEC’s Head of Public Relations, clarified in an interview that they received about half of what they needed on Friday afternoon, which was less than previously stated by the Majority Chief Whip.

He explained that they were still waiting for a balance of GH¢93.55 million to conduct the exams and had some leftover debt from 2023 to be cleared.
