Former Nigerian international Etim Esin has urged the Super Eagles to adopt a more balanced attacking strategy and reduce their heavy dependence on star striker Victor Osimhen.

His comments come after the recent fallout between Osimhen and former Super Eagles coach Finidi George, which has stirred controversy in Nigerian football circles.
Esin is concerned about the current state of the national team, especially following their poor performance in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The Super Eagles managed only one point out of six in matches against South Africa and the Benin Republic.
Esin pointed out that Osimhen was absent during Finidi’s first two official games as head coach, which resulted in a draw and a loss.

This absence led Finidi to allegedly say he wouldn’t beg Osimhen, the reigning African Footballer of the Year, to play for Nigeria.
A public dispute ensued, with Osimhen expressing his loss of respect for the coach on Instagram Live. Esin finds this situation unacceptable, highlighting the need for a more diverse goal-scoring strategy.
He reminisced about the past when the team had multiple goal sources, unlike the current over-reliance on Osimhen.
Esin suggested that Osimhen should even be rested in some matches, like the defeat against Benin, to encourage a more balanced team performance.
Esin emphasized the importance of good teamwork and goals from various players, not just one star. His remarks reflect growing concerns among Nigerian football fans.
