The Presidency has criticized Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate, for his negative remarks about the Federal Government’s plan to buy new aircraft for President Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima.

On June 17, Obi released a statement saying the decision was insensitive, especially when many Nigerians are struggling with economic difficulties caused by the government’s policies.

Responding quickly, Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, criticized Obi’s comment. Onanuga questioned if Obi would prefer risking the President’s life by having him fly in outdated planes.

In an interview with Punch, Onanuga questioned if Obi wanted the President to fly in a faulty aircraft and face potential danger, referencing incidents involving the Vice Presidents of Malawi and Iran.
Onanuga emphasized that ensuring the President’s safety is essential and noted that the current plane, purchased during former President Obasanjo’s era over 20 years ago, recently developed issues during a trip to Saudi Arabia, forcing the President to travel to the UK on a commercial flight. He stated that experts have recommended replacing the aircraft.
Onanuga criticized Obi for making what he called unnecessary statements and highlighted that the National Assembly had officially recommended the purchase of new aircraft.
Recently, the House of Representatives Committee on National Security and Intelligence urged the Federal Government to acquire new aircraft for President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima.
