Witnesses reported that the accident occurred on Sunday, June 17 2024 night during the convoy’s journey from the capital, Lilongwe, to Mr. Chilima’s home village in Ntcheu, where he was laid to rest following his death in a plane crash a week ago.

Amidst clashes and tensions between local residents, police, and soldiers escorting the convoy, the traffic mishap unfolded as thousands lined the streets to witness the funeral cortege pass by.

According to reports, mourners had gathered along the route, some expressing discontent by throwing stones at government vehicles and officials.

In the chaos, a privately owned vehicle traveling in the opposite direction swerved off-road to avoid the procession, tragically colliding with a group of mourners.

The collision claimed the lives of two men and two women, while twelve others sustained injuries and were hospitalized for treatment.

Contrary to earlier reports, the vehicle involved was not part of the official funeral convoy, confirmed by a police statement clarifying the circumstances of the accident.

Felix Njawala, spokesman for Mr. Chilima’s UTM party, acknowledged tension along the procession route, noting that in Dedza, mourners had obstructed the convoy, demanding to view the late vice-president’s coffin before the convoy continued its journey after assurances were given.

The UTM party has strongly condemned the violence that erupted during the funeral proceedings, urging supporters to uphold peace and refrain from any acts of aggression.

State broadcaster MBC quoted UTM secretary general Patricia Kaliati emphasizing the party’s commitment to peaceful conduct, echoing Mr. Chilima’s advocacy for harmony.

Saulos Chilima, aged 51, was widely admired for his rapport with the Malawian populace, particularly the youth, and his tenure in politics was marked by efforts to bring about positive change.

His untimely death in a plane crash has prompted an outpouring of grief across the nation, evidenced by the large turnout at the funeral service held at the national stadium.
