Millwall and Montenegro Goalkeeper Matija Sarkic Dies Aged 26

The football world is mourning the loss of Millwall and Montenegro’s goalkeeper Matija Sarkic, who has died at the young age of 26 after a brief illness. Sarkic became ill while in Budva on duty.

According to the Montenegrin state TV station RTCG, Sarkic had spent time with friends and returned to his apartment early. He started feeling sick around 6 a.m., and even though his friends quickly called for medical help, it was tragically too late.

Millwall released a statement expressing their deep sorrow: “Millwall football club is in shock and sadness over the death of Matija Sarkic at 26 years old.

Sarkic, the main goalkeeper for The Lions, played in 33 games for the team after transferring from Wolverhampton Wanderers in August 2023.

He was a proud representative of Montenegro in international football. The club extends its deepest sympathies to Matija’s family and friends during this extremely difficult time.

The club has requested privacy for Matija’s family and will not comment further at this time. In his final match for Montenegro, Sarkic was named man of the match after making nine saves in a 2-0 loss to Belgium.

He also received the man of the match honor in Millwall’s last season game, securing a 1-0 victory over Swansea.
