Speaker Alban Bagbin Cautions Against Use of Military During Elections

As Ghana gears up for its upcoming elections, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has issued a stern warning against the use of the military in the electoral process. In a recent address to the House, Mr. Bagbin emphasized the need to exclude the military from supervising polling and voting centers unless necessary.

Addressing the House on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, Mr. Bagbin expressed his concerns over the recent incidents of violence witnessed during the voter registration exercise. He highlighted the alarming trend of individuals carrying weapons, such as knives and guns, to registration centers, painting a worrying picture for the upcoming elections.

“We don’t want to see the military during elections,” Mr. Bagbin asserted, emphasizing that their presence should be limited to situations where their assistance is vital.

He also stressed the importance of maintaining a peaceful and secure environment for voters, free from intimidation or interference.
