Malawi’s Vice President Saulos Chilima has been confirmed dead following a plane crash that claimed the lives of all ten passengers on board. The tragic news was announced by President Lazarus Chakwera on Tuesday.

The aircraft went missing on Monday after failing to land at Mzuzu International Airport, located approximately 380 kilometers (240 miles) north of the capital, Lilongwe. Despite intensive search and rescue efforts, the wreckage of the plane was eventually located, revealing the devastating outcome.

“The search and rescue operation I ordered to find the missing plane that carried our vice president and nine others has been completed. The plane has been found. And I am deeply saddened and sorry to inform you that it has turned out to be a terrible tragedy,” President Chakwera announced in a somber address to the nation.

Vice President Chilima, aged 51, was en route to a government function when the aircraft lost contact with aviation authorities. The incident has plunged the nation into mourning, as Malawians grapple with the loss of a prominent and influential leader.
