In a video posted on YouTube on June 9 2024, Waller cited a health scare he experienced in November 2023 as a pivotal moment that led to his decision.
The former player described a frightening incident where he struggled to breathe and spent 3½ days in the hospital, unable to perform basic tasks.
Although he didn’t disclose the exact nature of his illness, Waller reflected on the experience, realizing he needed to reevaluate his priorities.
Despite his appreciation for the game and the opportunities it provided, Waller admitted that his passion for football had been waning.
He expressed gratitude for the NFL’s support during his rehabilitation from addiction and his subsequent return to the sport, acknowledging the league’s role in his personal growth.

Waller’s retirement comes after a successful career marked by resilience and transformation. Drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in 2015, he faced early challenges due to substance abuse issues, resulting in suspensions.
However, after finding redemption with the Las Vegas Raiders, Waller thrived, earning Pro Bowl honors in 2020.
During his one season with the Giants, Waller showcased his talent, recording 52 catches for 552 yards and one touchdown in 12 games. However, ongoing hamstring injuries and a recent divorce prompted him to reassess his future in football.
“We have great respect for Darren as a person and player. We wish him nothing but the best,” the Giants said in a statement Sunday, June 9 2024.
