American singer Mandisa’s cause of death has been revealed.

The Grammy-winning artist and former American Idol contestant passed away at the age of 47 due to complications of class III obesity, according to an autopsy report obtained by PEOPLE.
The report indicated that Mandisa was discovered deceased in her home by friends on April 18, with her last known activity being approximately three weeks earlier. Her death is classified as natural.
Class III obesity, also known as severe obesity, is a condition where a person has a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher, or a BMI of 35 or higher coupled with obesity-related health issues, as explained by the Cleveland Clinic.

Mandisa’s representative confirmed her passing to PEOPLE in a statement on April 19, 2024. “We can confirm that yesterday Mandisa was found in her home deceased,” the statement read. “At this time, we do not know the cause of death or any further details. We ask for your prayers for her family and close-knit circle of friends during this incredibly difficult time.”
Born in Citrus Heights, California, Mandisa gained recognition as a contestant on season 5 of American Idol. Following her appearance on the show, she released her debut album, True Beauty, in 2007.
The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart, making her the first new female artist to achieve this milestone. Additionally, she received her first Grammy nomination for Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album.
