Workers of the State Transport Corporation (STC) are vehemently opposing the appointment of a third deputy managing director, labeling it an unnecessary use of public funds.

The employees argue that the current two deputies are adequate to handle the corporation’s requirements.

In a petition obtained by JoyNews, the workers contend, “The company has operated without a Deputy Managing Director for a considerable period, suggesting that reducing the number of deputy managing directors will not adversely affect our operations.”

The employees urge the corporation to prioritize acquiring more buses and addressing significant financial obligations, including settling over six million cedis in overdue pensions.

“It is imperative to emphasize the current challenges facing the company, particularly the dwindling fleet of operational buses. Presently, out of a total of 145 buses, only 39 are deemed roadworthy,” the petition states.

The workers attribute this situation to “the inferior quality of the Daewoo buses acquired in 2020, resulting in frequent repairs and maintenance issues.”

Additionally, the petition underscores severe financial issues.

“The outstanding provident fund contributions and other statutory deductions are significantly overdue. The arrears include provident fund contributions overdue for about six years, Tier 2 arrears totaling six months, and SSNIT deductions exceeding six million Ghana cedis (GH¢6,000,000.00),” the petition adds.

In their efforts to have their demands met, the unionized staff have vowed to continue their protest, including barricading the office of the Deputy Managing Director, until the appointment is revoked.
