Former Basketball Player, Duane Klueh dies at 98

Indiana State University is mourning the loss of Duane Klueh ’49, a legendary alum and professor emeritus who left an indelible mark on the institution. Klueh, who was a revered basketball and tennis star, a dedicated coach, and an esteemed associate professor of Physical Education, passed away at the age of 98. His profound influence on the university, both on and off the court, will be remembered by many.

Duane Klueh was born in Bottineau, North Dakota, and grew up in Terre Haute, Indiana. He began his remarkable journey at Indiana State University in 1946, where he soon established himself as one of the greatest basketball players in the university’s history. Playing for the Indiana State Teachers College from 1946 to 1949, Klueh honed his skills under the guidance of coaches John Wooden and John Longfellow. His outstanding performance on the court earned him the title of National Player of the Year and an All-American in 1948, bestowed by the Helms Foundation.

In 1949, Klueh was drafted by the Boston Celtics, marking the beginning of his professional basketball career. He played two seasons in the NBA, showcasing his talent with the Denver Nuggets and the Fort Wayne Pistons. However, his heart remained with his alma mater, and in 1955, he returned to Indiana State University, this time as a coach for basketball and tennis.

Klueh’s coaching career at Indiana State was distinguished and impactful. Over 12 seasons (1955-1967), he led the basketball team with dedication and strategic prowess, earning four Indiana Collegiate Conference “Coach of the Year” awards. His influence extended beyond the court as he served as the president of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Basketball Coaches, demonstrating his commitment to the sport at a national level.
