A recent rejection of $350 million tax waivers for 42 companies under the 1D1F initiative has sparked a war of words between the Majority and Minority in Parliament, with accusations of hypocrisy flying back and forth.

The rejection, spearheaded by the Minority led by Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson during a recent emergency sitting, raised questions about the rationale behind granting such waivers at a time when the government is facing financial strain due to the economic crisis.
However, the response from the Majority, led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has been swift and accusatory. Addressing the media in parliament, Afenyo-Markin criticized the Minority’s stance, highlighting what he sees as a double standard.

Afenyo-Markin pointed to past instances under the Mahama administration where significant tax exemptions were granted, often without parliamentary approval.
He specifically mentioned waivers granted to companies like MPS and Gyata Cement, which he claims amounted to billions of dollars.
The Effutu MP didn’t mince words, accusing the NDC MPs of hindering the progress of local companies and Ghanaian businesses with their rejection of the tax waivers.
The implication is clear: the Minority’s stance on tax exemptions now is inconsistent with their past actions in government.
The back-and-forth between the Majority and Minority underscores the ongoing political tensions surrounding economic policies and financial decisions in Parliament.
