He noted that unlike oil-based fuel, solar energy does not require foreign exchange to import.
Dr. Bawumia commenced his tour by visiting the Waala Overlord, Naa Fuseini Pelpuo IV, at his palace, where he engaged with chiefs and elders.
In a welcome address read by his spokesperson, Naa Kadir Ibrahim Jinpenhi, the Waala Overlord praised Dr. Bawumia’s stance on LGBTQ+ issues and expressed confidence in his continued opposition.
The Overlord also raised the issue of compensation for victims of military brutality that occurred nearly three years ago in Wa. The incident involved soldiers beating civilians in retaliation for an alleged phone theft.
Despite promises from the military high command, the victims have yet to receive compensation.
“Your Excellency, almost three years ago my people were beaten by rampaging military men. The soldiers came into town beating up almost everyone in sight extensively, as revenge for the alleged theft of a mobile phone belonging to one of them. The issue brought the military high command to Wa, and the traumatised victims were promised compensation. July 2024 will mark three years since the unfortunate incident, but the promised compensation has not been paid.”

In response, Dr. Bawumia assured that he would investigate the matter and ensure the victims receive the promised compensation.
Dr. Bawumia later met with Muslim clergy at the regional library, where he outlined his vision for the country’s future under his leadership.
He emphasized the potential of solar power to reduce electricity costs, stating, “I believe one way we can reduce the cost of electricity is by transitioning from oil-based fuel power generation to solar power.
Let’s use the sun to generate electricity instead of oil-based fuel. I plan to introduce 2000 MW of solar power. God gives us the sun for free; we don’t need foreign exchange to import the sun, but we need foreign exchange to import oil-based fuel.”
He also highlighted his focus on large-scale mechanized agriculture supported by irrigation. Dr. Bawumia committed to investing more resources into agriculture to enable in-country processing of produce, which he believes will transform the country.
Overall, Dr. Bawumia’s visit to the Upper West Region underscored his commitment to innovative energy solutions and agricultural development as key components of his vision for Ghana’s future.
