Equatorial Guinea’s hopes for the 2026 World Cup have taken a severe hit after FIFA imposed strict sanctions on their national team for using an ineligible player, Emilio Nsue.

FIFA has ordered the team to forfeit their victories against Namibia and Liberia, giving them a 3-0 loss for both games.
Nsue, who was the top scorer at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations with five goals, played a crucial role in these wins.
However, FIFA’s investigation revealed that the 34-year-old was not allowed to represent Equatorial Guinea in these matches. Consequently, the football federation of Equatorial Guinea faces a $164,000 fine for breaking eligibility rules.
The most damaging part of FIFA’s decision is the removal of the six points Equatorial Guinea earned from the two games.

This forces the team to start their World Cup qualifying campaign from scratch, erasing their strong start. Previously, they were second in their group, just behind Tunisia on goal difference.
Losing these points is a significant blow to their chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The suspension is also a personal setback for Nsue, who will be banned from international football for six months. This comes at a time when he was celebrated for his performance in the recent Africa Cup of Nations.
FIFA’s tough sanctions highlight the importance of following player eligibility rules in international competitions.
Equatorial Guinea must now regroup and focus on the remaining qualifiers, facing a challenging road ahead in their quest for the World Cup.
