Atalanta clinched their first-ever UEFA title in dramatic fashion, thanks to a stunning hat-trick from Ademola Lookman that secured a 3-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League final. This victory not only marked a significant milestone for Atalanta but also ended Bayer Leverkusen’s remarkable 51-match unbeaten streak across all competitions.

Entering the clash as underdogs following their recent Coppa Italia Final loss to Juventus, Atalanta faced a formidable Leverkusen side that had already secured the Bundesliga title and was aiming for a Treble. Under the strategic guidance of Xabi Alonso, Leverkusen adopted a False 9 approach, notably leaving star forward Victor Boniface on the bench.
Atalanta’s aggressive start to the match paid off early when a poorly cleared corner from Leverkusen provided an opening. Davide Zappacosta’s precise cross found Ademola Lookman, who deftly slotted the ball into the net from eight yards, outmaneuvering Exequiel Palacios to open the scoring.

Lookman continued his brilliant form by doubling Atalanta’s lead after intercepting a misplaced header by Amine Adli. Demonstrating exceptional skill, the Nigerian forward nutmegged Granit Xhaka before curling a right-footed shot into the bottom corner. This goal made Lookman the first African player to score twice in a major UEFA final.
Despite Leverkusen’s efforts to mount a comeback through attempts by Alex Grimaldo and Charles De Ketelaere, Atalanta’s defense remained resolute, thwarting any significant threats. The introduction of Victor Boniface as a substitute added some attacking prowess for Leverkusen, but Atalanta’s goalkeeper Juan Musso made crucial saves to preserve the lead.
Lookman sealed the historic victory and completed his hat-trick with a spectacular left-footed strike from a tight angle, becoming the first player ever to score a hat-trick in a Europa League final.
