The Vice President highlighted that the establishment of the residential facility and training center fulfills a promise made to the head porters when he visited their hub in Agbogbloshie, Accra.

By combining the residential facility with a training program, the government aims to provide transitional job opportunities for the kayayei to enhance their socio-economic well-being.

The facilities in Madina and Ashaiman are part of a larger initiative to impact over 100,000 head porters nationwide, with additional centers being developed in Kumasi and Techiman.

Dr. Bawumia, who also serves as the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), launched the Kayayei Empowerment Programme.

This comprehensive program includes training for an initial group of 5,000 head porters, focusing on skills like baking, beading, personal healthcare, financial management, and entrepreneurial skills.

The program emphasizes post-training support and monitoring to ensure the participants’ successful transition to new opportunities, providing them with starter packs to prevent a return to head porter roles.

The first phase of training aims to empower 5,000 head porters, starting with groups of 600 beneficiaries at the Madina and Ashaiman hostel facilities.
