Featherweight Murphy, aged 32, maintained his unbeaten record with 14 wins and one draw after defeating Barboza.

The judges unanimously scored the fight in favor of Murphy, who also earned a noteworthy $50,000 (£39,000) performance bonus for his outstanding performance, deemed the ‘fight of the night’ at the UFC Apex.

“I came here for a war,” Murphy declared after his triumph. “I’ve had the hardest road out here. I’ve put in the work, continue to climb. I’m not really bothered about the rankings; I’m just trying to get to that title.”

Brazilian fighter Barboza, aged 38, made his UFC debut 14 years ago. Despite his experience, Murphy managed to outshine him in the octagon.

“I just took out a legend, Edson Barboza, who was on a two-fight winning streak,” Murphy proudly stated. “I deserve the recognition now. I’ve been in there with the best of the best. I just showed my worth. I’m going to be champion. Simple.”

Although Murphy suffered a nose injury from a Barboza kick in the first round, it did not deter him from securing the victory.

The win might delay Murphy’s next fight in his hometown of Manchester, with UFC 304 scheduled to take place there on 27 July 2024.

In another fight on the undercard, Zimbabwean welterweight Themba Gorimbo clinched his second consecutive victory by defeating American Ramiz Brahimaj on points.
