Dutchyshen passed away on May 15, 2024, surrounded by his closest loved ones, according to a family statement that did not elaborate on the cause of death.

Born in Regina and raised in Porcupine Plain, Saskatchewan, Dutchyshen was a mainstay of Canadian sports media.

He began his TSN career in 1995, hosting weekend editions of SportsDesk, and became best known for anchoring late-night editions of SportsCentre over the next three decades.

Stewart Johnston, Bell Media’s senior vice president of sales and sports, praised Dutchyshen for his “incredible sense of humour and magnetic energy,” calling him a “legend of Canadian sports broadcasting, a great teammate, and an essential part of TSN for the last three decades.”

Dutchyshen was candid about his battle with prostate cancer, which forced him to take a break from SportsCentre in 2021. He returned to the air a year later, revealing that the cancer had spread, yet he continued working, saying, “The place that I feel best is right here.”

His co-anchor Jennifer Hedger once told him, “You are the best in this country at this job,” highlighting his exceptional talent. In the fall following his return, Dutchyshen hosted TSN’s coverage of the Grey Cup in his home province of Saskatchewan, seamlessly resuming his duties.

Sportscaster Rod Smith, who worked with Dutchyshen for several years, remembered him as “tough, yet friendly, funny, engaging, and kind; truly, one of a kind.” TSN plans to honour Dutchyshen by inviting close friends and co-workers to share stories of his character and storied career in the coming days.

Throughout his career, Dutchyshen hosted various high-profile events, including Olympic Prime Time on TSN during the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver and the London 2012 Summer Games.
