Super Gran star Gudrun Ure Passes Away aged 98

Gudrun Ure, the renowned actress known for her iconic role in the 1980s children’s show “Super Gran,” has passed away at the age of 98.

Ure died at her residence in London on May 14, 2024, as confirmed by her niece, Kate McNeill.

Ure gained immense popularity for her portrayal of Granny Smith, a grandmother who acquired superpowers after a fortuitous encounter with a magic ray in the ITV series “Super Gran,” which aired from 1985 to 1987.

Aside from her memorable role in “Super Gran,” Ure enjoyed a diverse career encompassing stage productions, radio plays, and appearances in various TV shows.

Notably, she starred alongside Hollywood legend Orson Welles in a 1951 stage adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Othello.”

Born on March 12, 1926, in Milton of Campsie, Scotland, to Allan and Lily Ure, she was the eldest of three siblings.

Throughout her extensive career, Ure’s most acclaimed performance came later in life when she portrayed Super Gran, a character beloved by audiences of all ages.

The “Super Gran” series, based on Forrest Wilson’s books, chronicled Granny Smith’s adventures as she used her newfound powers to safeguard the residents of Chiselton from various villains, notably the scheming Scunner Campbell, played by Scottish actor Iain Cuthbertson.

“Super Gran” garnered widespread acclaim and was syndicated to approximately 60 countries worldwide. In 1985, it received an International Emmy award in the Children and Young People category.

Throughout her career, Ure appeared in numerous films, television shows, and radio productions, showcasing her versatility as an actress. She captivated audiences with her distinctive voice and memorable performances, leaving an indelible mark on the entertainment industry.

Despite her illustrious career, Ure remained humble and approachable, leaving a lasting impression on those who had the privilege of working with her. Scottish actor Joe McFadden, who starred alongside Ure in the BBC drama “The Crow Road,” fondly recalled her warmth and professionalism on set.
