According to an announcement on OpenAI’s blog on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, Sutskever will be succeeded by Jakub Pachocki, who currently serves as the Research Director at OpenAI.

In a post on X, Sutskever described OpenAI’s journey as “miraculous” and expressed confidence in the company’s ability to develop AI that is both safe and beneficial under its current leadership.

Sutskever’s association with OpenAI dates back nearly a decade when he joined the company as its research director in 2015, having already gained recognition for his work on neural networks at the University of Toronto and the Google Brain lab.

During his tenure, Sutskever played a pivotal role at OpenAI, even officiating the wedding of President Greg Brockman at the company’s offices.

However, his departure follows disagreements with former CEO Sam Altman over the pace of AI development, a contentious issue that led to Altman’s brief removal last year. Jan Leike, another prominent figure at OpenAI, also resigned amid the conflict.

Despite his departure, Sutskever remains one of the most respected minds in the field of artificial intelligence. Altman described him as “one of the greatest minds of our generation” and expressed admiration for his contributions to the company.

Sutskever’s exit has sparked speculation about his future endeavors, although he hinted at an upcoming project that holds personal significance for him.

Meanwhile, Jakub Pachocki, the newly appointed Chief Scientist, brings years of experience to the role, having led the development of OpenAI’s GPT-4 AI model since joining the company in 2017.
