The legal proceedings were initiated through court documents filed in family court in Palm Beach County, Florida.

McIlroy, 35, currently competing in the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club, confirmed the impending separation through his manager, Sean O’Flaherty.

“Rory McIlroy’s communications team confirmed today that a divorce has been filed,” stated O’Flaherty. “They stressed Rory’s desire to ensure this difficult time is as respectful and amicable as possible. He will not be making any further comment.”

The couple shares a 3-year-old daughter named Poppy.

The duo first crossed paths at the 2012 Ryder Cup, where McIlroy met Erica Stoll. They began dating two years later, following McIlroy’s previous relationship with tennis star Caroline Wozniacki.

McIlroy and Stoll exchanged vows in Ireland in 2017. In the court filing, McIlroy’s legal team cited irreconcilable differences, seeking shared parental custody of their daughter and enforcement of a prenuptial agreement signed on March 7, 2017.

While the reason for the divorce remains undisclosed, the petition for dissolution of marriage was filed confidentially.

Thomas J. Sasser, McIlroy’s attorney in this matter, is notably recognized for his representation of Tiger Woods during his divorce from ex-wife Elin Nordegren in 2010.
