The Ghanaian government has announced that it will transfer GHC177 million within the next 72 hours to pay allowances to nursing trainees. This announcement was made by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on May 14, 2024, to mark International Nurses Day in Accra.

Dr. Bawumia acknowledged the numerous petitions from trainee nurses regarding the delay in their allowance payments, which has affected their practical training.

He assured the trainees that the Controller and Accountant-General has been directed to effect the payment.

“I wish to assure the nursing trainees that by Thursday this week, the Controller [And Accountant-General] is transferring an amount of GHC177 million to the Ministry of Health to pay the trainee allowances,” Dr. Bawumia assured.
Additionally, Dr. Bawumia mentioned financial clearance for unposted nurses and other initiatives, such as vehicle waivers for healthcare workers.
He emphasized that steps are being taken to clear the backlog of unemployed nurses by August.
