Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, Managing Director of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), has disclosed that the final phase of construction for the Prempeh I International Airport is anticipated to conclude by September this year.

Opare revealed that ongoing efforts include extending the runway from 1,981 meters to 2,320 meters, a project set to be finalized by September 2024.
Speaking at the airport’s inauguration in Kumasi, Mrs. Opare outlined additional tasks within Phase 3, which include the construction of additional taxi links and new apron parking stands.
She emphasized the airport’s significance as a pivotal gateway for Ghana’s burgeoning aviation and tourism sectors, predicting a surge in passenger traffic from the Ashanti region and beyond.
“The Prempeh I International Airport will streamline travel for passengers, eliminating the need for lengthy journeys to Accra’s Kotoka International Airport for international flights,” Opare stated.

Furthermore, Opare disclosed ongoing negotiations with prominent international and regional airlines keen on establishing operations at the airport.
Airlines like British Airways, Kenya Airways, ASKY Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, Turkish Airways, and Tap Portugal have expressed interest, with Egypt Air already conducting successful landings and take-offs.
Opare underscored the importance of maintaining the airport to high standards, ensuring longevity and efficacy for future generations. She pledged the GACL’s commitment to the upkeep and enhancement of the airport facility, positioning it as a premier aviation hub in West Africa.
