Fokuo, who is also the New Patriotic Party’s Parliamentary Candidate for the Manso Nkwanta Constituency in the upcoming 2024 election, has sparked controversy regarding his suitability for the position, given the challenges facing NIB.

In a Twitter post on May 11, 2024, Simons questioned the decision-making process behind Fokuo’s appointment, particularly criticizing the choice of a parliamentary aspirant for a struggling state-owned bank.

Simons expressed his curiosity about the Bank of Ghana’s approval of the appointment, considering Fokuo’s political commitments and the demanding nature of the role.

Fokuo emerged victorious in the NPP’s parliamentary primary, defeating four other contenders. He is scheduled to assume his new role as MD of NIB on Monday, May 13, succeeding Samuel Sarpong.

Despite the controversy surrounding his appointment, a memo to the bank’s staff emphasized Fokuo’s extensive experience and expressed optimism about his ability to lead NIB toward a prosperous future.

In addition to Fokuo’s appointment, Philip Ofori-Asante has been nominated as Deputy Managing Director, bringing valuable banking expertise to support NIB’s recovery efforts.

The memo assured employees that the ongoing restructuring and transformation initiatives at NIB would continue under the new leadership, with the full support of the Board and close collaboration with management.
