Fela’s altruism was such that, upon his death, Seun was left with nothing, despite receiving a daily allowance as a student that surpassed his teacher’s salary.

Seun Kuti shared that Fela provided for nearly a thousand people in the Kalakuta community. In a live Instagram video, Seun reminisced about the time when Fela was Nigeria’s leading musician, and their home housed about 500 individuals. Fela used what would have been Seun’s inheritance to support these people.
Seun Kuti detailed how everyone in Kalakuta received a daily allowance and weekly pay, covering nearly a thousand people, including artisans from various professions.
Seun highlighted that his allowance in 1990, during his primary school years, was N100 per day, more than his teacher earned.
