The military governor of the province, Peter Chirimwami, recently highlighted the “worrisome” and “unpredictable” situation prevailing in the region.
In an interview with Xinhua in Goma, the provincial capital, Governor Chirimwami underscored the escalating tensions fueled by various armed groups.
Notably, the M23 rebels have intensified their activities, particularly since February, in the southern part of the province. Additionally, the resurgence of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) in the north has further exacerbated the crisis.
The ongoing conflict has prompted the provinces of North Kivu and Ituri to remain under a state of siege since May 2021. Despite joint operations with the Ugandan armies, government forces have struggled to contain the rebel advances.
The recent clashes near Sake, a strategically vital township, have heightened fears and underscored the gravity of the situation.

With roads blocked and exit routes cut off, Goma, home to millions, finds itself under immense pressure. The influx of displaced persons has strained the city’s resources, while the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate.
The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) has warned that Goma risks isolation, hampering aid delivery to vulnerable populations.
In the face of these challenges, Governor Chirimwami remains resolute in his determination to defend the city and its residents. He expressed confidence in the support provided by the Southern African Development Community (SADC), which has deployed a regional force to bolster the DRC’s efforts.
However, the path to peace and stability remains fraught with obstacles, as millions continue to suffer amid the relentless violence.
As the crisis deepens, there is an urgent need for concerted action to address the plight of displaced persons and alleviate the suffering of those affected.
With millions displaced and lives at risk, the international community must redouble its efforts to bring an end to the conflict and restore hope to the people of North Kivu Province.
