Alt-Rock Musician and Renowned Chicago Recording Studio Founder, Steve Albini, Passes Away at 61

Renowned alt-rock musician, audio engineer, and founder of Chicago recording studio Electrical Audio, Steve Albini, has passed away at the age of 61.

The news of Albini’s death was confirmed by Brian Fox, a fellow producer and engineer at Electrical Audio, who stated that Albini died Tuesday, May 7 2024 night from a heart attack.

“We are not ready to make any other statements yet. Maybe in the next few days, we could talk about his impact, which was immense,” Fox said in an email.

Albini’s passing comes just over a week before the scheduled release of a new album by his longtime band Shellac, titled “To All Trains,” set to be released on May 17. This album marks the band’s first release since 2014.

Albini was widely revered and influential in the world of indie rock, particularly during the genre’s peak in the 80s and 90s. His contributions elevated the standards of indie rock and continue to resonate today.

Beginning his music career in 1981, Albini formed the punk rock band Big Black while studying at the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University.

He later formed two other bands, Rapeman and Shellac, with Shellac being the longest-existing and most significant band of his performing career.

In addition to his work as a musician, Albini made substantial contributions as an audio engineer and producer.

He played a pivotal role in recording some of the most influential albums of the alternative rock era, including Nirvana’s “In Utero,” Pixies’ “Surfer Rosa,” and PJ Harvey’s “Rid of Me,” among others.

Albini’s impact extended beyond the indie rock scene, as he collaborated with legendary artists such as Cheap Trick, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, and Foo Fighters, who recorded their hit song “Something from Nothing” at his Electrical Audio studio in Chicago.

Albini’s legacy as a musician, audio engineer, and studio founder leaves an indelible mark on the music industry, and he will be remembered fondly by fans and colleagues alike.
