New Zealand music icon Willie Hona has passed away at the age of 70.

The renowned singer-guitarist, best known for his role in the iconic reggae band Herbs, bid farewell on Sunday night, May 5, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones in Paraparaumu after battling cancer.
Natalie Hona, his daughter, confirmed the news through a heartfelt post on social media, which has been validated by several close friends of the late musician.
Hona’s contributions to the music scene were profound, earning him a cherished place in New Zealand’s musical legacy.
His impact was especially felt during his time with Herbs, where he lent his talent to several chart-topping hits, including ‘Slice of Heaven’ (with Dave Dobbyn) and ‘Sensitive to a Smile’.

Before his tenure with Herbs, Hona’s journey in music began with his high school band, The Vibrations, where he crafted melodies on a makeshift guitar. Later, he co-founded The Face alongside fellow musician Mark Williams.
Even after parting ways with Herbs in 1988, Hona continued to pursue his passion for music, embarking on solo endeavors and releasing albums such as ‘Keep An Open Heart’.
In 2012, Hona received the ultimate recognition for his contributions to New Zealand’s music landscape when he was inducted into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame as part of Herbs.
