Bomb blast in IDP camp in Eastern DR Congo claims lives of 10 individuals

A bomb blast rocked an internally displaced persons (IDP) camp near Goma, the provincial capital of North Kivu in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), resulting in the tragic loss of at least 10 lives.

The incident, which occurred on Friday, May 3, 2024,  morning, left several others injured, according to local sources.

Witnesses reported that multiple bombs were dropped at the Mugunga camp, situated approximately 10 kilometers west of Goma city.

Hospital sources confirmed that at least 17 individuals, including children, sustained injuries and were rushed to Bethesda CBCA Ndosho hospital in the city.

The hospital, which hosts a surgical team from the International Committee of the Red Cross, is actively treating the wounded.

While the provincial government of North Kivu has yet to officially announce the casualties, it has attributed the attack to the M23 rebels.

The region has been witnessing escalating conflict between the Congolese army and the M23 movement, with the rebels gaining control of territories in North Kivu province in recent weeks.
