The Los Angeles Lakers have parted ways with coach Darvin Ham after two seasons, signaling the start of a new era for the storied franchise.

Ham, who had two years left on his contract, led the Lakers to a 90-74 (.549) record in the regular season and a 9-12 (.429) record in the postseason since his appointment in 2022.

The decision to relieve him of his duties comes after the team’s recent elimination by the Denver Nuggets in the playoffs, marking the second consecutive season the Lakers have been ousted by Denver.

“We greatly appreciate Darvin Ham’s efforts on behalf of the Lakers and recognize the many accomplishments achieved over the past two seasons including last year’s remarkable run to the Western Conference finals,” said Rob Pelinka, Lakers vice president of basketball operations and general manager, in a statement. “While this was a difficult decision to make, it is the best course of action following a full review of the season.”

Following Ham’s dismissal, the Lakers also parted ways with their entire coaching staff, including assistant coach Phil Handy.

Despite the efforts of star players LeBron James and Anthony Davis, who played their most combined games since joining the Lakers, the team failed to meet expectations, finishing as the No. 7 seed in the Western Conference.

Ham inherited a Lakers team in 2022 that was coming off a disappointing season and made significant roster changes during his tenure. While there were moments of success, including an in-season tournament title, the Lakers ultimately fell short of their championship aspirations.

The decision to fire Ham marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Lakers as they seek to return to championship contention.
